MCC Develops Biobased Polycarbonatediol, a Polyol for PU Resins & more
Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation developed worlds first bio-based polycarbonatediol, is the raw material mainly used to produce resins and polyester. It can be used for automotive & electronic products.
Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation announced that it has developed the worlds first bio-based polycarbonatediol, a type of high-performance polyols, and will begin worldwide market development and sales in April of this year. MCC uses proprietary manufacturing processes to produce the new product, which is of an entirely different composition than any other currently available polycarbonatediols.
Polycarbonatediol is the raw material mainly used to produce resins such as polyurethane, acrylic, and polyester. With its superior durability, it can be used for automotive interior materials such as synthetic leather for seat covers and instrument panels, automotive exterior coating, and resin coatings for electronic products such as smartphones and PCs. MCC also anticipates strong demand for this new polycarbonatediol in eco-friendly water-borne polyurethane resins.
By using its proprietary technology to create a new polycarbonatediol from renewable bio-based raw materials, MCC has set the stage for production of new products with superior mechanical properties, flexibility at low temperatures, chemical resistance, abrasion resistance, and high hardness, among other special characteristics, which were difficult to achieve with currently available polycarbonatediols.
MCC currently has the capacity to produce some 1,000 tons per year of the new polycarbonatediol, and plans to expand production capacity as demand increases. With this new product and the rest of its current polyols, MCC will continue to offer solutions to the diverse needs of its customers.
