Denver -- Adhesive formulators always strive to provide high quality adhesives with strong bond and reliable processing. Replacing solvent-based adhesives with waterborne ingredients can provide improved performance, while meeting stricter environmental regulations. The Adhesive & Sealants Councils two-day short course on waterborne adhesives offers insight into these trends.
Dr. Jeffrey Dormish, business development - Adhesives & Specialties, Bayer MaterialScience LLC, will discuss these topics during his presentations, "Polyurethane Dispersions for Adhesive Applications," and "Waterborne Polychloroprenes for Adhesive Applications." Both presentations will take place during the Waterborne Adhesives Short Course at the Adhesive and Sealant Councils (ASC) Spring Convention and Expo, taking place in Denver.
Each presentation will provide an overview of the chemistry and manufacturing processes for each class of adhesives. Aqueous polyurethane dispersions provide the basis for many waterborne adhesives, offering a high intial bond strength, resistance to moisture and plasticizers, and several grades that are compliant with Food & Drug Administration regulation 175.105. During his first presentation, Dr. Dormish will cover polyurethane dispersions, including application methods, crosslinking and performance.
It is possible to replace the raw materials used for solventborne adhesives with waterborne polychloroprenes that offer high storage stability without affecting end-use performance. Different combinations of polychloroprene latexes allow formulators to tailor adhesives to target typical contact adhesive applications. Dr. Dormishs presentation will include the principles of contact adhesives, production and microstructure of polychloroprenes, applications and starting formulations, focusing on waterborne products.
